4.5 quake rattles L.A.

An earthquake rocked Los Angeles early today, waking people up and knocking things off shelves. There were no reports of injuries.The magnitude 4.5 quake struck just before 1 a.m. and was centered roughly four miles northwest of Chatsworth, according to a preliminary report by the U.S. Geological Survey.

The thrust from the earthquake near the Santa Susana Fault was felt for a "couple to a few seconds" from Santa Barbara to Palmdale and Gorman to Irvine, said Caltech seismologist Nick Scheckel."It's like dropping a pebble into a pond, so as the ripples ring out, it tends to last longer and longer the farther it goes, energy-wise," Scheckel said.
